North Korea not to co-host Olympics with South Korea
Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), recently made it clear that North Korea will have no share in the hosting rights of the 2018 Olympic Games that are going to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The idea of co-hosting the prestigious international sporting event was brought forward by Chang Ung, who is an IOC member from North Korea. According to a North Korean delegation that was present in Tokyo at the Olympic Council of Asia, North Korea as well
as South Korea may consider to collaboratively stage the 2018 Winter Olympics in the event that the tensions prevalent between the two countries subside. But Rogge left no doubt that such a privilege will not be extended to North Korea. However, the two countries
can cooperate in any symbolic activity, such as a joint parade.
"The IOC awards the Games to one city in one country," said Rogge, who was meeting with several evacuees of the March 11 earthquake at the national training center on July 15. “In the specific case of North and South Korea, there has been in the past --
specifically to the 2000 Games in Sydney -- the two teams paraded together in the opening ceremony of the Games. This is something we would and could consider in future Games without any problems.”
Rogge also added that distributing the venues of the Olympic Games between the two countries is something against the Olympic charter. The reasoning behind ‘one city, one country’ as the sole host of the Olympics event is that it makes it a lot easier to
hold the games. Otherwise, the event is spread over a great distance and organisational communication is affected. The Olympic Games are a major event that involves a lot of complications and it is in the best interest of the event to be held in one location.
Pyeongchang had previously bid to hold the Olympic Games twice, both times losing by a close margin. However, it was able to win the third time, having gathered the majority votes against Munich and Annecy.
