Question:

North Uist - what's it like to live there?

I am looking to move to N.Uist with my family - girl 10, boy 13. Children are equally excited about the move ( if not more!) but I would like some inside information!

My husband would prob be working in Inverness, so transport links and the effect of the weather on these are important.

Also, are locals receptive to "foreigners". Here in Devon, it takes 20 years to be considered a local!!

We are hoping to change our lives completely - learn Gaelic, keep chickens and horses etc.

Are there opportunities fro teh children to meet up with others - what sort of activities are there.

I understand there are some really good primary schools, but I may be home teaching. I aslo understand the secondary school is on Skye?

Any information about living on N.Uist as opposed to just visiting and touring would be greatly appreciated.

  1. See the councils website, but i'm sure that 1st and 2nd year is spent locally and for 3rd and 4th year you have to weekly board at school. You would probably be accepted quicker by learning Gaelic, but it's not easy to learn(I've tried).
