The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) is always ready to promote the wonderful sport of volleyball in every nook and cranny of the world. The FIVB has established so many regional development centres to encourage the game.
Quite recently the FIVB Regional Development Centre in Dominican Republic organized a two-day Volleyball Festival in the city of Santo Domingo. The festival was the result of special efforts by North and Central America and Caribbean Confederation (NORCECA), in collaboration with the National Institute of Physical Education and the Dominican National Volleyball Federation.
It was the third Volleyball Festival in Santo Domingo, which was held last weekend. The famous Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Park, hosted the colourful activity and facilitated the participants of the event. This event was solely dedicated to young aspiring volleyball players of both genders.
A total of 148 teams made their presence felt in the festival. There were 112 girls’ teams and 36 boys’ team, which played matches in 21 courts. Besides the players there were a large number of young boys and girls from private and public institutions, who came to watch the competitions among various teams. According to a rough idea, approximately 1,500 students, aged 10-15, attended the event.
Mr. Nelson Ramirez the Director of the Development Centre of Dominican Republic played an instrumental role in organizing this event. He greeted the players and their instructors and expressed his gratitude to local authorities for their support and collaboration. He disclosed his thoughts, while talking to media. Mr. Nelson said:
“The organization of the Volleyball Festival forms part of the FIVB’s initiative of helping make the sport more popular among the young people. It also promotes the formation of good citizens and contributes to the physical and mental development of our youngsters”.
The two-events were full of thrilling competitions, which provided a great opportunity, to a lot of players, to show off their talents. The great vibe of the event could be felt by the presence of so many participants. The event proved to be a great success and the FIVB aims to continue this tradition in future.
