North or South from Los Angeles?

Question

I'm taking a weeklong trip to Los Angeles next week, and we're planning to take a day trip to see some of the California coast. My question is this: is the coastal route more scenic going north from LA or south? I was looking at pictures of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, and they both look wonderful (SLO is perhaps a bit far though). San Diego looks great as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Go north, and make sure you go through Malibu before leaving LA. SLO is way too far to go to and return in one day, but the area north of the city of Ventura until the city of Santa Barbara has some great coastal scenery. I would say that if you really want a great trip along the coast, drive to the coastal cities just before SLO (Pismo Beach, Avila Beach, Shell Beach, Grover Beach, Oceano), and stay over, and go trough Big Sur the next day, but the Big Sur area was ravaged by fires for a couple of months, so that may not be a good side trip now.

North.

The trip South is okay also, but a lot of the beaches in Southern California are dirty with greenish looking water. The beaches up North are much cleaner and you get a better view of the scenery as you are driving because there's less smog.

Besides, Los Angeles is closer to the bottom of the state, so if you travel North you will have a lot more to see.

san diego it great iv allways wanted to go but i dont go that south, there is nothing to do in santa barber malibu n santa monica are great

Oh My God!!! You have to go to MALIBU. It is my favorite place in the entire world. And you can be just driving along and see dolphins jumping in the water and seals on the beach. Go during the middle of the week. It's alot less crowded than the weekends. Also from there you should go to Santa Barbara it's only about 80 miles from Malibu and it's beautiful especially in the evening.
