Northampton thrash Wasps in the Aviva Premiership
Northampton thrashed Wasps 37-10 on Sunday 24 October in the Aviva Premiership.
Stephen Myler, Chris Aston and Courtney Lawes all ran in tries and Soane Tonga’uiha scored a brace for Northampton.
Ben Jacobs managed to get a consolation try for the home side, who were overrun by Northampton.
Myler scored the first points in the match after he knocked over a penalty when the Saracens scrum went down. The out-half should have extended his sides lead, but failed with his second penalty attempt.
Myler made amends after he jinked his way past the Saracens defence and charged over the line for the opening try of the match.
Tonga’uiha added a second try shortly afterwards and Myler added the two points with the conversion.
Northampton’s dominance was rewarded with a piece of good fortune as Aston was not flagged for offside when he latched onto Myler’s clever grubber kick. The out-half was successful with the conversion
as Northampton threatened to run riot.
Dave Walder got Saracens on the score board with a penalty, but Myler restored their lead with another well taken penalty to bring the sides in with Northampton up 25-3 at the end of the first half.
Tonga’uiha scored a similar try to his earlier one as he pushed over from a line out and driving maul. Myler was once again successful with the conversion.
Lawes scored Northampton’s fifth try of the game after he broke through the Wasps defence to touch down.
Jacobs managed to grab the home side a consolation try, when he charged down a kick from Ashton. Walder converted with his kick, but Wasps were already comprehensibly beaten by that stage.
The day got worse as centre Riki Flutley was injured and he now looks likely to miss England’s internationals in the autumn series.
Northampton director of rugby, Jim Mallander said, "That was a very satisfying performance. We've never won down here before so we knew we needed to play well and we certainly did that today.”
“We looked at their team sheet and thought we have a really good chance of strangling them up-front,” he added.
In contrast Wasps director of rugby Tony Hanks was disgusted with his side and said, “There's a sense of embarrassment at having let the supporters and our families down. Our supporters have been great
for us in the last few weeks, but that performance wasn't befitting of them.”
"It's a mixture of disappointment, frustration and embarrassment. It's a horrible feeling when you come second like that," he added.
