Northamptonshire v Warwickshire – Friends Life t20 (Midlands/Wales/West Group) – Match Update – Warwickshire secure 7-wicket win
Aided by Chris Woakes’ 3-wicket haul, followed by skipper Jim Troughton’s unbeaten half-century (which won him the Player of the Match award), Warwickshire secured a 7-wicket victory, with 23 deliveries remaining, against Northamptonshire in the Midlands/Wales/West Group match of the ongoing Friends Life t20 at the County Ground in Northampton on June 29.
Chasing 154, Warwickshire got off to a shaky start, with opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rikki-Clarke-c85428 (48) and Troughton (68*) picked it up from there, and established a solid 85-run stand which got their side up to 90 runs by the 11th over.
Vaas struck once again to dismiss http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Con-de-Lange-c1280 sent Maddy packing, lbw, in the 13th over.
By this point, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Warwickshire-c862 had reached 108 for 3, and needed 46 more from roughly 7 overs. Laurie Evans (33) proved to be just what the team needed, and his 4th wicket, unbeaten 46-run stand with the skipper propelled their side to 154 by the 17th over.
Northamptonshire’s bowlers had few answers to the opposition’s batting display, and aside from Vaas and de Lange, none of the remaining bowlers managed to make any dents in Warwickshire’s batting order.
Their batting display earlier had displayed similar weaknesses. After having won the toss and elected to bat first, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Richard-Cubitt-Johnson-c84946.
The remaining top order and early middle order managed to get starts, but were unable to convert them into substantial scores. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KJ-Coetzer-c1798 joined Willey for a 46-run stand, but the partnership crumbled in the 8th over, with Coetzer dismissed by Paul Best, after a contribution of just 24 runs, and Willey run out by Woakes 2 deliveries later.
Rob Newton (38) and Cameron White (39) were the next duo to attempt to resuscitate the flagging batting order, and their partnership of 78 remained the highest on their side. However, both were dismissed by Maddy in the 17th over, leaving their side at 129 for 5. From there onwards, none of the batsmen managed to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Middlebrook-c1651 (14), and Con de Lange (2) all fell without much of a fight.
Woakes finished with figures of 3 for 27, while Maddy managed 2 for 13, and their efforts proved instrumental in restricting Northamptonshire to 153, a target which their batsmen chased with ease, with 23 deliveries to spare.
