Northeast Delta Dental International: Esther Choe loses to Jenny Gleason in playoff
American Esther Choe, who currently ranks number one in the Volvik Race for the Card, faltered in the final moments of the Northeast Delta Dental International 2012 as she lost to Jenny Gleason in playoff.
Choe displayed a stellar performance in all the three rounds at Beaver Meadow Golf Course, Concord, and came close to inflicting a defeat on her nearest rival Gleason.
However, Gleason was quick enough to regain her momentum in the playoff as she sank a birdie on the first hole to win the event.
Choe, who is best known for her putting skills on the Symetra Tour, kicked off the tournament with confidence as she carded a decent 71 in the opening round.  The American star knew that the only way to move ahead was to hold her nerve and avoided making lousy strokes.
On the other hand, Jenny Gleason overshadowed every player on the leaderboard, as she got off to a solid start by posting a 69 in the opening round. She stepped up pressure on rivals in the second round as she carded a 68.
However, her performance in the third round provided much room to Choe, who was a little behind Gleason at the end of the second round. Gleason shot a 74 on the third day of the tournament and let Choe share the lead with her.
Choe, who has racked up two Symetra Tour titles in the current season, capitalised on Gleason’s poor performance in the third round and shot a 71 to grab the share of third-round lead.
However, in the playoff, the most successful Symetra Tour star could not hold her ground and messed up her score on the leaderboard. Gleason, who was already brimming with confidence, grabbed the opportunity and sank a birdie on the very first hole.
Speaking to the media about how she lost to her rival in playoff, Choe said that she had lost hope when she completed her second round, but came back in contention at the end of the third round.
"I was a little disappointed about the way I finished my back nine," Choe said, "but at the same time, I never thought I would even get into the playoff. I thought I had lost for sure. Just to get the opportunity and that experience under my belt, it was great".
