Northern Chief wins10th consecutive race
Northern Chief clinched his tenth victory, equalling the track record set by the racehorses at Monticello Raceway. Northern Chief, the seven-year-old colt of Apache’s Fame was ridden by Mike Merton on a muddy track. The two finished the race in a time of
1 hour 59 minutes and 3 seconds on Wednesday. After this victory, the gelding has come at par with Hogies Cam (2008) and Mr Thinker (2010). Both the aforementioned racehorses have set the records of bagging 10 consecutive victories in their career meets.
Starting the race from the eighth slot, Northern Chief managed to hold off the pace setter Doug’s Boy ridden by Alan Schwartz.
In a post race interview, the pleased jockey Mike Merton was reported as saying, “I moved him second over after the half and went three deep up the backstretch to get alongside Jimmy (Marohn with the pace setter Texas Treasure) and in the stretch the old
guy just cruised home an easy win.” Merton also went on to say, “We tied it today and hopefully we’ll break it next week.”
The bay coloured racehorse has been trained by the Gary Messenger, meanwhile, his owners are Bob Merton Jr. and Al Desimone. The colt is popularly known to be pace setter at the muddy racetracks. After winning this event on Wednesday, Northern Chief added
an eleventh victory to his athletic career. This was the gelding’s 18th start of the season.
Northern Chief who triumphed over the muddy racetrack was sent out as a second choice. He was paid $ 5.9 for the win, as a “win wage”.
The record of winning ten starts in a row was last set by Dream State, the daughter of Dream Vacation at the Monticello Raceway on the 3rd of August 2010 after she won the New York Sire Stakes.
Eight racehorses will now be contending the fifth leg of the North American Amateur Drivers Association’s Fall Series Trot on Thursday the 28th of October afternoon at Monticello Raceway.
