Northern Districts v Canterbury – Plunket Shield, 2012/13 – Match Recap – Rain forces contest to end in draw
What was shaping up to be an interesting final day came to a premature end owing to incessant spells of rain, with the Plunket Shield match between the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canterbury-c775 Wizards, played from December 2 to 5 at the Seddon Park
in Hamilton, forced to end in a draw owing to the weather.
The match had kicked off with the Wizards winning the toss and choosing to field first. All four of the bowlers in their attack managed to claim at least one wicket each, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Nuttall (10-1-28-2), and
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Knights-c805’ batsmen.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graeme-Aldridge-c1502 (15), were the only other batsmen who reached double figures. A total of three batsmen failed
to contribute any runs at all, and within 74 overs, the Wizards had managed to bowl Northern Districts out for a first innings total of 200.
However, after executing a decent bowling performance, the Wizards fell short on the batting front during their own first innings, troubled as they were by the Knights’ Aldridge (12-2-45-5), and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Brent-John-Arnel-c48390 (16.3-5-48-3). Only three batsmen managed to move
beyond single-digit scores – Tom Latham (15) remained lacklustre, and while Gareth Andrew (89) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Todd-Astle-c2697 (53) managed decent outings, their efforts alone were unable to hold the entire team up. The Wizards eventually found themselves all out at a disappointing
186.
The Knights built steadily on their lead during their second turn at bat, and a string of impressive performances saw them gaining a significant upper-hand, despite the efforts of Canterbury’s McCone (17-4-43-2) and Cole McConchie (27-3-81-2). Joseph Yovich
(128) led the team with a steady century, and half-tons from James Marshall (61), http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BJ-Watling-c1172 (68*), and Corey Anderson (69*), kept the team on solid ground. Having worked their way up to 410, and set the Wizards a daunting target of 425,
the Knights decided to declare.
Picking up from their score of 22/0 from the third day, when rain had ended play, the Wizards proceeded to embark once again upon the chase on the final day of the match. Opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Herrick-Worker-c59349 (18) was soon dismissed by Aldridge, and Tom Latham (23)
also made his exit off Ish Sodhi shortly before lunch. The day was interspersed with bouts of rain which interrupted play at various stages, and after lunch, with Canterbury at 112 for 2, and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dean-Brownlie-c1349 (1*) at the crease,
the weather eventually forced the match to end in a draw.
