  1. Ireland, Éire, is the happy, prosperous sovereign state occupying the larger portion of the island of Ireland.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a separate sovereign state occupying the island of Great Britain, the small nearby islands (but not the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands), and the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland.  The differences tend to be more in a technical/commercial context--the currency in the North of Ireland is pounds sterling, the mail service is by Royal Mail, the telephone is British Telecom, etc.   Overall, though, the scenery and culture is different from the whole of the UK.  Same with Scotland, Wales, and Channel Islands......British by technicalities, but not culturally.

  2. Northern Ireland is a part of the UK, the Republic of Ireland is a separate country.

...or to put it another way:- Northern Ireland is a part of the UK, the Republic of Ireland is apart from the UK (and rather a lot of people died to make that happen).

  3. No only northern island is part of the UK. The republic of island is basically another country, it uses different currency (Euro) compared to the british pound.

  4. n.i only

  5. Only Northern Ireland is part of the uk . My Husband is from Belfast .

  6. Northern Ireland is part of the UK

Republic is a sovereign state. The word "republic" is a good clue, since we have a queen, and a republic wouldn't.

  7. the republic of ireland is not apart of the u.k northeran ireland is part of the u.k

  8. NO! Thank God you didn't ask that when you got here, it's like be on national news!

Britain is made up of Scotland Wales and England

UK is made up of Britain and Northern Ireland

  9. Here's a clue, dear - Republic. A republic is not a monarchy, and the UK is a monarchy, in that it has a Queen and a royal family.

Yep, the US education system really provides a good grounding in politics!

  10. Northern Ireland is Ulster, mainly Protestant part of the United Kingdom. Southern Ireland is Eire, is a republic mainly Catholic and not part of the United Kingdom - but both are part of the British Isles.

  11. no

northern ireland is part of the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland and the republic is not, its all in the name.

from the easter rising (1916) and the split in 1921-22, the republic ceased being a member of the uk, and shortly after ceased being a member of the commonwealth

  12. Northern Ireland and The ROI wants to be.

  13. northern ireland is apart of the uk only, the republic of ireland  is a seperate country

  14. somehow I think this is a bit of a wined up.  as far as northern ireland and southern ireland.  well as a welsh man living in dublin i have learnt that there is a lot of mixed ideas(beliefs) some good, some not so!!! geographically they are the same country, politically they are separate by various degrees (depends who you talk to) yes they are all in the British isles but you only say that if some one is annoying you about taking the queens coin and other rubbish.  northern islands days are numbered the only thing that is stopping the unification is the national health service and the fact that southern island can't afford it.  basically england doesn't want either and would love to give it to the south.  it will happen in my life time, who knows.

  15. it all depends if you r a catholic or a prodestant

  16. Northern Ireland is part of the UK. It is sometimes referred to as Ulster - this is wrong as NI =6 counties and Ulster = 9 counties and is a province of the of the island Ireland. 3 of the counties of Ulster are part of the Republic.

The Republic is as it says on the tin - it's a Republic, a very successful and happy one at that.

  17. no northern ireland is part of the UK

the republic of ireland is a separate country

  18. The Republic isn't even in the Commonwealth anymore.

Much of 6 countiy region -part of 9 county Irish Province of Ulster  still held onto by Britain  e.g. Derry --the second largest city of the region, South   Armagh. North Antrim , Fermanagh and South Tyrone to name a few notable regions are generally  deeply hostile to British rule.

to call 'the six counties' as they're often referred to in Ireland  "Ulster" is a misnomer - Ulster actually includes the counties of  Monaghan, Cavan and Donegal which are in the Republic.
