Northern Puppy Derby: A value addition to Teejays Bluehawk’s profile
October 17 was a day of upsets at Newcastle racecourse as three of the four major contests were won by non-favourite and underrated hounds. Thus, the day brought great enthusiasm and thrill for the sports fans, but it caused sheer disappointment to the punters
who lost a lot.
Where Mags Gamble won All England Cup and Ballyard Buddy stood first in Great North Run, Teejays Bluehawk stunned all by walking away with the glorious title of the Northern Puppy Derby.
Along with the grand victory, the P. Young trained blue dog brought home £8000. It was a big matter of honour, both for the trainer and the runner.
On the other hand, the two joint-favourite hounds, Lemon Pluto and Jaytee Hellcat, badly disappointed their fans, bettors and trainers alike.
The high-staked open race of 480-metres began at 9:25 (GMT). After breaking from Trap 3, Teejays Bluehawk looked to be sharp enough from the very beginning.
Just after a few seconds, the two-year-old novice runner managed to take lead. J. Sharp’s Lemon Pluto tried his utmost to catch the frontrunner, but in vain.
Each one of Joscar and Jaytee Hellcat got baulked and could not be able to regain their lost speeds, hence, they were left behind by the other four runners.
Express Flame and Killieford Deal fought for the third position that finally went to the former.
The results of the race were quite astonishing to many. The entire crowd was spellbound to see the way Teejays Bluehawk added the prestigious title to his portfolio.
That victory was indeed a big breakthrough for the young dog just at the threshold of his career. The son of Westmead Hawk out of Droopys June debuted in June and broke his maiden by winning a T2 race on July 11.
He picked up enough form by finishing first in the Hove Puppies on July 19. That success came with the mammoth margin of 2 ¾ lengths.
It is hoped that Teejays Bluehawk will accomplish more glaring feats in the months to come. The punters will not dare to underrate him now. In fact, he is destined to peak. Good luck to the dog.
