Northern Trust Open: Donald, Johnson, Yang to miss the cut
Several big names like Luke Donald, Dustin Johnson, and Y.E. Yang are expected to miss the halfway cut in the Northern Trust Open on Saturday at the Riviera Country Club.
Tour officials have marked the cut at the score of 3-over-par. This gives way to a notion that players like Luke Donald, D.A. Point, Troy Matteson, Y.E. Yang, Dustin Johnson, Greg Chalmers, and Ryo Ishikawa might miss the cut.
Donald, who is number-nine in the world, started with a strong pace when he netted four birdies with a 61% success rate in Green Hits in Regulation(GIR). However, by the end of the second round, he hovered in the danger zone with a score of 5-over-par. He
had six bogeys and two double-bogeys in the 18-hole session with 39% in GIR.
The next veteran queued on the list is the Korean Yang. The 2009 PGA Championship winner dropped six shots in the first round and three in the second.
Jonathan Byrd, who won the season opener Hyundai Tournament of Champions, is lurking on the 108th spot of the leader board after 36 holes. The player opened with a 76 and eventually pulled the score down to 72, which pushed him to 6-over-par.
Another name expected to lose the cut is the world number 14, Dustin Johnson. He picked a 73 in the first round and 75 in the second, owing to a late-start penalty. The player showed up late for his tee time and earned a treat, which jeopardised his entire
scorecard and morale.
The poster boy of Japan, Ryo Ishikawa, is expected to pack bags and head home after the second round. The player has not completed his Friday session yet and has two holes left on pending after low visibility halted play. Ishikawa was five-over in the opening
round, when he bogeyed three consecutive holes on the back. Ishikawa is ranked 40th in the world and hence, would play in the World Golf Championship, which is scheduled for next week.
Several toppers of the official World Golf Rankings are projected to miss the cut, which would stop them from proceeding in the tournament.
