Northern Trust Open remains inhospitable as ever
Northern Trust Open, for a long time, has maintained the reputation of being a platform of gathering the best of golf on one course.
However, on one hand where it welcomes all of them, on the flip side, this time it is equally inhospitable to some of the most senior players in the game of golf.
The most astounding news prior to the event came when Northern Trust Open sidelined Mike Weir’s request that he made regarding the exemption of a sponsor.
It is important to mention here that Weir has not just won the Masters Championship, he has also been a back-to-back winner at Riviera in the last decade.
However, it is more interesting to note that the exemption is not just limited to Weir, but also encompasses Fred Couples, K.T. Kim, Jason Gore, UCLA winner Patrick Cantlay and Texas amateur Jordan Spieth.
Out of all, it was the rejection of Spieth that undoubtedly came as the biggest jolt for all.
The freshman was able to make a cut at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, but has no on paper connections with Los Angeles.
In addition to this, Weir was trying to make his way back in the event after recovering from an elbow surgery, but he chose to remain quiet over the issue for the time being.
Furthermore, this is not the first time this kind of mismanagement or administrative flaw has taken place at Northern Trust Open.
About a decade ago, something similar happened with Robert Allenby who, at that time, was the defending champion of the event.
When he was asked about his credentials, he provided them with all the necessary information. His name, however, could still not be found on the list of people getting registered for the event.
Enraged by the entire act, he intentionally pasted his own photograph at the notice board that read “That’s Me”.
However, apart from these complications, it is the star-studded line-up of the event that has turned out to be the ultimate attraction for golf players as well as the audience.
The arrival of comeback kids comprising Phil Mickelson, Kyle Stanley and Snedeker, along with World No. 1 Luke Donald, are all set to lighten up the event.
