Norway hands France a thrashing 5-2 defeat to eliminate them - IIHF World Championships Updates
The French were hoping to bring home some sort of joy with a win over one of the most dominating teams in the IIHF World Championships, Norway.
Norway has been very successful in the sport recently with one player doing exceptionally well when it comes to scoring goals.
The scoring machine for Norway, Marius Holtet, has been brilliant in the Championships so far and if he is consistent in his performance, Norway are in for a treat in the 2011 IIHF World Championships.
The brilliant offensive play he has exhibited so far has played a major role in getting Norway a quarterfinal berth, with the entire weight of the team on his shoulders.
An amazing fact is that this is only the second time that Norway has made it into the quarterfinals over the past 19 years since the playoffs were incorporated in the tournament. This happened in a few years ago, back in 2008.
Holtet went absolutely wild during the course of the game and scored four goals, all brilliantly executed goals.
Per-Age Skroder was also on the score-sheet for Norway as they came up with a comfortable 5-2 win in the end. Although Holtet didn’t have an impressive season with his club, he was able to show his productivity with the national team, scoring six goals in the tournament so far.
While playing for his Swedish club, Farjestad Karlstad, he was able to score only four goals during the season.
"It was just one of those days when everything goes in", Holtet said. "It's not very often you get four goals in a game. It was a big game for us because now we don't have to rely on Switzerland losing to the United States to get in".
France was able to crawl their way into the game and there was a point where they were trailing 3-2. However, Norway stepped up their pace and was able to score two more goals to win the game by a 3-goal margin, 5-2.
