Norway takes home the 2011 Women’s World Championship; beats France in finals – Handball News

The final of the 2011 World Women’s Handball Championship was played on December 18, 2011 at the Ginasio do Ibirapuera indoor arena in Sao Paulo in front of a crowd of four thousand spectators. France and Norway were the finalists as they both were hoping to
take home the championship. The Norwegian women handball players became the new champions. They defeated France 32-24.

As the match began, both teams showed high spirits. Their morale was at its best for they both were fighting for the top prize in world women’s handball division. The Norway women’s handball team did well in the round stage of the competition.
They played five matches in the first round of the tournament and won five games, giving them the top spot in their group. On the other hand, France also proved their worth in the first stage when they won four of their five matches.
They were placed at the second spot in their group after hosts Brazil.

The two teams were in great form, both physically and mentally. In the knockout stages, both teams proved their worth by winning matches against tough competitors. The French team defeated Sweden in the round of sixteen and later won their match against Russia
in the quarter-finals by two goals. On the other hand, the Norway handball team defeated Netherlands in the round of sixteen followed by their win over Croatia in the quarter-finals.

During the finals of the tournament played on Friday, December 18, 2011, France was eyeing a win in the finals to clinch their second championship win. They won the World Championship in 2003 and came at the second place in the championships of 1999 and 2009.
Their performance was going well but their opponents contained them to just twenty-four goals. The Norway handball performed well in the previously held World Championships.

They were the winners of the 1999 championships and came second in the championships of 1986, 1993 and 2009. In the championships of 1997, 2001 and 2007 they came third. In the finals of the 2011 World Championships, the Norwegian women handball players showed
the world why they deserve to become champions. They played with consistency, confidence and used offensive strategies in scoring thirty-two goals against France. For Norway, Kristine Lunde-Borgersen scored six goals while for France, Angelique Spincer and
Claudine Mendy were top scorers with four goals each.
