Norwegian Challenge: Kristoffer Broberg wins second European Challenge Tour title in a row
In his third start of the 2012 European Challenge Tour season alone, Kristoffer Broberg registered the second victory of the year, with a birdie on the second playoff hole on Sunday, at the Norwegian Challenge.
Broberg, who also won the last week’s Finnish Challenge, played along Alvaro Velasco and former Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson during the final group of the day.
He parred each of the opening six holes before birdying the sixth hole. Thereafter, he once again parred eight holes in a row, prior to another birdie on the 17th hole.
That was a time when Velasco also joined him on the top, with a 22-under par overall score. Both the players recorded pars on the final hole and entered the sudden death playoff.
The first extra hole once again saw them remain equal with par putts. On the second playoff hole, Velasco took the advantage with a perfect tee shot against Broberg’s wayward drive that found the rough.
Velasco became the hot favourite when his second shot landed within five feet of the pin. Meanwhile, Broberg’s shot dropped 60 feet away from the hole.
However, 26-year-old Swede shocked everyone on the course with a stunning birdie putt from such a long distance against his rival’s missed putt and took the trophy home.
Now his record shows a total of three top-10 finishes in as many tournaments, including two victories.
“It was amazing,” he said. “I’m so happy right now. I was so tired from the last two weeks I almost just wanted it to be finished but to finish it like that was just incredible”.
“That’s definitely the biggest putt I have holed in a position like that. My drive was a little to the right and I hit a six iron but I didn’t strike it like I would have liked to. Even then, I still didn’t let myself think that I wasn’t going to win,” he
added.
He also told that he did not play as he wanted and parred too many holes during the day. According to him, he could have avoided the playoffs if he had availed all the birdie chances that he received.
