Norwegian Jan Berner leading Faroe Islands squad at GAC Group 2011 World Table Tennis Championships
Norwegian Jan Berner from Norway is leading the Faroe Islands squad at the GAC Group 2011 World Table Tennis Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
The rest of the squad features Albinus, Frodi Jensen, Hallur Thorteinsson, Henrietta Nielson and Rakul Mikkajalsdottir.
The championship has gained attention from all over the world. Players, officials and coaches from all parts of the globe are participating in the mega event of the sport.
Despite representing the Islands at the world championships for the first time, the Faroe Islands squad made a good first impression.
They won the first doubles match of the championship at the qualifying rounds of the championship. The duo of Hallur Thorteinsson and Henrietta Nielson won the match against Sudan’s Omer Mansoor and Habab Hussein. It was an impressive straight win for the
players. The final score line of the match was 11-3, 11-3 and 11-4.
Henrietta Nielson expressed his joy and said, “We won our first march, we beat a pair from Sudan three-nil, we controlled the match.”
In the Women’s and Men’s singles, the situation went against the Faroe Islands players and they lost in the initial matches of the qualification stage of the event.
Hallur Thorteinsson said, “We have lost to better players, we have lost to higher ranked players, and nevertheless, it has been a good experience.”
It was a very good experience for the young players from the Islands. Rotterdam gave the players a platform to make their entrance in the table tennis world.
Henrietta Nielson belongs to Denmark but her family moved to Faroe Islands a few years back. Most of the players practice at the capital of the Islands, Torshavn. The national camps are also held in the same city. The team also visits Denmark after every three
months each year to participate in various table tennis competitions.
In Rotterdam, they are gaining a lot of experience as they have never encountered players from all over the world. Let’s see how well they fare at the conclusion of the event.
