  1. I took a weekend trip on the gem in december. they give you a guide in your room stating which is which. we went to the garden cafe most of the time, which was a buffet with a wide variety of things since most of the other free restuarants were booked. also, if i were to do it all over agian, i would have brought a suitcase of water/soda because all of that you have to pay for.

  2. I went on the first Norwegian Gem cruise last October for an 11-night meditterenean cruise. It was fantastic! Clint Wells, the cruise director is funny and gorgeous. Bck to the original question: Yes, the Gem does have restaurants that have cover charges. The ones that don't have cover charges are Garden Cafe (buffet), Magenta (reserved seating), Blue Lagoon (24 hour restaurant) and La Cucina (Italian restaurant). The ones that do have cover charges are Le Bistro (French resto), Orchid Garden (Japanese resto) and Cagney's (Steakhouse). Of all the restaurants, in my experience, the best service and best food are in Le Bistro and The Orchid Garden. Both have amazing dishes and have unique ways in serving your food. There is also a Mexican restaurant, I forgot the name but it does not have a cover charge.

    Enjoy!
