So this summer I'm going on a Norweigan Cruise of some European countries. The problem is, I'll be 17 and the family we go with has an 18 and 19 year old so I'm afraid that on the ship that we wont be able to do things together since I'm not 18. Can anyone tell me if this will be an issue?

  1. Your parents will hate that I answer, but even my 15 year old gambled in the casino. Dress well, behave appropriately, and ENJOY. Most places are pretty lax about the age issue- if you are close. Cruise people will not "throw you out" of anywhere, unless you make a fuss. you WILL have fun, and don't worry about the age thing so much. My sons have even used Dad's ship ID card to bypass the hole punch that is normal on "kid's" cards.

  2. I have been on about 8 NCL cruises and here's what I suggest to you.  You will be able to use all of the facilities on the ship including the pools, hot tubs, gymnasium, lounges, game room, library, internet cafe, and attend all of the shows except those that may be designated for adults only (and you will probably be able to attend those  also unless you look like you are 12 years old).  If you are going with 2 others who are so close to your age no one on ship will stop you from attending; they are mainly concerned that young kids do not attend adult shows with for example adult comedy.  You will be able to attend the daily evening shows in the main showroom.

The main thing that you are probably concerned about is drinking.  And NCL's policy (which is about the same as every other cruise line) is you cannot purchase and consume alcoholic beverage unless you are age 21 or older; with the exception that you can consume beer and wine with the written consent of a parent.  Here's the policy from NCL's web site:

"With the exception of Alaska and Hawaii itineraries, (Where you must be 21 years of age to consume or purchase alcohol of any kind) NCL permits guests between the ages of eighteen (18) and twenty (20) to purchase and personally consume wine and beer while on NCL ships with the consent of an accompanying parent or legal guardian on the same sailing once the vessel is outside the US state territorial waters (3 miles out). Complete details and special consent form are only available onboard at the Reception Desk. *If you want to gamble in our casinos, you must have a valid ID showing you are 18 years or older. If a guest under the age of 18 wins in the casino and can not provide proof of age, he or she will not be paid the winnings. There are no casinos on our ships in Hawaii."

So you will be able to go where your friends go but you will have to order "virgin" drinks with no alcohol and in the casino just watch others play.  There will be so much to do that you CAN participate in that I do not think there will be an issue.
