Question:

Nose bleeds & Amoxicillin?

I am taking Amoxicillin for Laryngitis, Pharyngitis, and a sinus infection. Since I started taking the antibiotics i've been getting frequent nosebleeds which last between 2-5 minutes each at a steady flow. So far, i've had 6 bleeds in 20 hours. Could this be caused by the sinus infection, or a side-effect of the Amoxicillin?

  1. - This is either a complication of sinus infection

    - or may be due to sudden increase in BP (especially if you are hypertensive)

    - history of known bleeding disorder and/ or you are on warfarin (or similar) therpy

    - I have not read about Amox causing nose bleed episodes.

    - Only reason of antibiotic induced bleeding I can think of right now is decreased vitamin-K levels due to reduction in colonic bacteria (may be seen with long term therapy).

    - In either case, see a Doctor ASAP
