but what is the other one where you are rated based on whether you have written a paper with some guy.

Six degrees of separation isn't a rating system.  It means that everyone in the world is only 6 people away from knowing everyone else in the world.  ie:   I know someone who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows you.
