Not Home at time of post office delivery?

If I'm expecting a package, but I'm not home when the post office delivers it, what will happen? Do they keep it, or do they just leave it on my doorstep? What if they leave it on my doorstep and it gets stolen? What happens then?

  1. The Post Office will usually leave you a card telling you that you have a package to pick-up. The card will also tell you what time the following day it will available at their office.

  2. In depends on if the package requires a signature. If it is either not insured or insured for less than $200.00, it probably does not require signature. In that case it can be left in a "safe and secure" place if there is one.

If there is no safe place to leave the package or if it required a signature and you aren't at home, you will be left a pick slip (Form 3849) to claim it at the post office.

If you want to give specific delivery instructions for your package (like leave it at my neighbors or at my back door) call 1-800-ASK-USPS. Your message will be relayed to your carrier through email from customer service.
