Not a warm welcome home for Mike Woodson as Atlanta Hawks beat New York Knicks 100-90: NBA Recap
On a night when Mike Woodson came back to his old home, the now New York Knicks coach was handed out a crushing defeat as the Atlanta Hawks beat the Knicks 100-90.
The Knicks, who are very short handed with a lot of their star players injured, went to the Philips Arena, Atlanta, GA to take on the Atlanta Hawks who were coming into this game on a 2 game losing streak. On the night though,
Josh Smith and Joe Johnson combined together for 51 points to beat their old head coach.
At the start of the game the Atlanta fans were treated with a strenuous action as both teams were fighting hard to get the ‘W’ for their respective organizations. Atlanta only led by two points till 1:14 were remaining in the
first period. From then onwards, the Hawks were able to administer a 6-0 run to open up a lead of 8 points after one.
Joe Johnson had 12 points and Josh Smith had 10 points in the first 12 minutes. From the other end, Carmelo Anthony despite being injured was leading the Knicks with 12 points.
Hawks played the second quarter with the same momentum, dominating the Knicks in every aspect of the game. Josh Smith had a spectacular first half performance scoring 17 points as the Hawks held a comfortable advantage, 50-42,
over the visitors at the half way stage.
Anthony scored seven more points in the second quarter and was leading the Knicks with 19 at the half. The All-Star forward led the New York charge at the start of the second half, as they cut Hawks lead down to only 5 points at
the end of the third period.
Carmelo Anthony had 12 more points while Smith had 23 and Johnson had 21 points from the Atlanta side, at the end of third period.
As the game entered the final quarter of the game, the Knicks continued to press and it looked as though New York will take this one. They very nearly got to within striking distance of the home team and were able to cut their
advantage down to only 2 points with 8:56 remaining in the game.
We have often seen teams lose their calm and throw away games in these kinds of situations but tonight was not one of those nights. Willie Green stepped up for Atlanta, scoring 15 of his 20 points in the final period to help the
Hawks beat the Knicks 100-90.
Joe Johnson had 28 points and Josh Smith had 23 points. Carmelo Anthony put up a gutsy performance with 36 points despite being injured and Iman Shumpert also chipped in 25 points to a losing cause.
