What happens to an embryo after you extract stem cells from it?

  2. Stem cells are simply undifferentiated cells, while most cells in your body have become skin or muscle or what-have-you cells, with some DNA inaccessible to them due to differentiation.  Embryonic cells haven't differentiated yet, so they are all stem cells.

    Recently, some promising research has been done showing that it may be possible to undifferentiate adult cells, which can then be used for stem cell research.

    Since an embryo essentially is a ball of stem cells, "extracting" stem cells basically means taking the embryo apart.
