Not easy to have complete friendship: Mark Webber
The Australian driver in the Red Bull line-up Mark Webber stated that it is not easy to have a complete friendship in Formula 1 as the drivers compete against each other for the championship apart from being teammates and friends.
There was an intense rivalry amongst Webber and teammate Sebastian Vettel during the 2010 season. There were many occasions where the two drivers gave comments against one another and Webber claimed that he was considered as the number two driver by his
team.
After the end of the season, there were many claims that the infighting has ended and both Vettel and Webber will have a better relationship during the next season. Webber said that it is not easy to have friends in your profession.
He claimed, “It's just not easy to have complete friendships. I think you have closer friends from outside of your profession. You pick up the odd one or two along the way for sure, but (they're counted) on the one hand.”
Though Webber believes that there cannot be a complete friendship amongst the teammates, he said that the element of respect should be there.
He said, “There is a healthy respect; there has to be in competing against your rivals, otherwise you wouldn't get out there and have a go.”
Apart from having good relationships with the team, Webber also said that there should be good relationships and respect for the opponents whom they are up against. He said that good results can only be achieved if there is respect for others.
Webber ended up third in the driver’s championship and his teammate Vettel ended up as the winner. Although Webber gave some negative remarks about the team, he still believes that his team played a crucial part in helping him to achieve a strong result
in 2010.
The Australian driver claimed that it is very important for the drivers to listen to some people in order to improve their results.
He said, “Listen to the people who can help you along the way, try and keep the continuity; the people who started out with you. It's nice to have that trust and the continuity with those people while you're going forward as a professional.”
The tensions between the two Red Bull drivers seems to have ended but the start of 2011 season will determine how true is that.
