Question:

Not getting a spark from a 1972 dodge 318 v8?

I have a 1972 dodge d200, a nice big ol' swamper, it's been sitting for about 8 years, we got it push started in second gear and got it to my place, after that I put a brand new starter in it with a battery, now when I crank it, there's no spark from any of the plugs. I've checked the distributer cap and wires, they seem to be in good working order, but the condensor looks a bit rusted and loose sitting on the distributor. Any one have any clue? It was just push started and running, nothing has been done to it, I have no idea why it wouldn't spark after getting a starter change. Oh right, the battery in it was in it when we push started, it was charged to, if that matters.

  1. more than likely the points are bad due to th fact that they were in the open position and the contacts are just dirty due to rust or corrosion, replace the points and condenser and it should fire back up.

  2. change the ballast resister. it,s that little ceramic thing on the firewall with 2 or 4 wires going to it. if it,s bad you won,t have spark.

  3. make sure all the wires from putting in the new starter are hooked up and hooked up properly this is where your distributor will get power while cranking

  4. check your condenser for rust under the wire. sounds like when you push started it it might have jiggled it to a good connection. a condenser( capacitor ) needs a good connection to run properly. if it ran it's getting spark. so it is most likely a bad connection from rust.
