Not happy at my current job

I am 39 years old and the boss that tells me what to do everyday is 10 years younger than me. We don't talk much about anything except the work or the job itself. I have been with this moving company working in a warehouse for close to 6 months now. We generally have 5 things that I may be asked to do each day. They are to get rid of trash and cardboard, unload trailers of boxes of furniture, wrap furniture that was returned to them, build chairs with screws and tools, or to find the right pieces of furniture to line up for trucks for someone to deliver the next day. The boss seems to mainly give me the job of doing the trash and cleaning up the warehouse. He has 6 other people working with us but always gives me the job of trash if it is needed. Otherwise he has me unload trucks when the need arises. I tried to put chairs together 1 day a few months ago and wasn't good at it and he hasn't asked me to do this again. The part of the job I like best is finding what is needed for the truck orders the next day. I used to do this by myself each day after lunch for about a month. At this point he discourages me from doing these trucks and tells me to not do them when he sees me doing one. He did have me work with someone else up to this week and now he seems to not want me to do this now. He will tell me to do something like wrap furniture. He must feel I made mistakes pulling truck orders but he never pointed it out to me. He will let a guy that has been there a month or less pull truck orders himself but not me. Out of the 6 people he works with I have been there the longest. It doesn't make me feel good being there the longest and being given the least responsibilty. I like a challenge in my job and will leave if I get another job offer. How would you feel about my situation? Would you want to continue working with me boss or not?

  1. join the boat, quickly find an new job while you have a job, you're more marketable that way

  2. Maybe he feels threatened by your maturity and wants to make sure you have no chance for advancement. If you plan on looking for another job anyway, why don't you approach him and ask. Just be blunt, but polite and don't ask in an accusatory manner..like "why do you have him to do that instead of me?", other wise he'll probably get defensive. Ultimately, only you can decide if the job is worth it, just be careful, the economy blows right now.I've been unemployed for 10 weeks after working my last position for 11 years...it's tough out there and there is always going to be something about a job you don't like. Approaching middle age is an ego-killer as well (I'm 38 AND female..lol)

    Good luck friend.

  3. I was fired from my job as a Operations Manager in 2001 and since then I promised myself that I will NEVER ever become dependent on somone else for a JOB.  I then went into business for myself and I have never looked back.

The best thing you can do is become financially independent.  I am now a Area Director/Business owner of a wonderful company and I help people just like yourself start their own businesses.  I you want information on how to do this visit us here: http://www.unselfishwealthtoday.com

The best thing now that you can do is believe in yourself, and I'm sure you already do.  So come see what we have to offer you.

Anyway look into the program and if anyone wants to get in on the business here is a interesting audio presentation:

  4. I wouldn't be happy at your position, for several reasons. It is easier to find a new job, if you still have your old one. I would start working on your resume and carefully look for a new job, where your work can be appreciated. As an Employment Specialist I can tell you the job market is tight and employers are getting tons of resumes and applications. Like any writing project, start out with an outline. For tips on writing an outline and which resume format to use visit http://www.bestemploymentresources.com. I typically use a combo of the chronological and functional formats, but most of my clients have gaps in their employment history or criminal records. At this level in your career and if you have steady employment I would use more of the chronological format with a Summary of Qualifications at the top. Pick your 5 most marketable skills and put them here. Don't get down on yourself, finding a new job takes a positive mind set, and you have to be willing to toot your own horn. So if you have to find 5 things you really like about yourself and repeat them to yourself when your feeling low or when your boss is discounting you. Don't give up hope, my last job was a living h**l, with a pyscho boss. Now I have a job I love, that has a chance of turning into a real career.
