Since when did any of us become responsible for someone else's happiness?  We cannot expect anyone else to make us happy; that has to come from within ourselves.  

He's committing emotional extortion with you.  Get out while you can, before it becomes a violent situation and you get seriously hurt.

By the way, why in the world would you want to make a jerk happy?  He's a jerk!  Is he being kind to you?  No.  Is he being loving?  No.  Is he being patient, good, gentle, etc?  No.  You're worth more than that, and I think you know it.

Your responsibility is for your own happiness, not getting the guy to stay happy at your expense.

He isn't helpless, I'm sure.  He won't stay miserable forever and if you stay with him and aren't happy now, do you really think you'll be happy after more months/years of his jerky behavior?  You have ONE LIFE to enjoy and make something of.  That's too precious (and you are too) to waste to keep someone else pacified.
