HOW TO REMOVE CLOSED MEMBERSHIP TO OPEN MEMBER SHIP

once a closed group, always a closed group and actually this warns you in red text prior to checking that choice.

I am sorry, only thing you can do is create a new group

I could be very wrong but  it seems to me upon forming a group if you choose that option it can't  be changed.  If I'm  right why not start another group with a slight name change then send an email invitation to all the  members asking them to join the new group.
