Not much to do for Detroit Tigers this offseason – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers is one of the strongest teams in the American League. They won the American League Central Division title for the second straight season and also reached World Series finals. Considering their power in both hitting and pitching departments
of the game, it is understandable why the Tigers have not done much in the early stages of the season.
Anibal Sanchez, who was quite sensational all through the 2012 season, was not re-signed by the Tigers during the five day negotiation period. Sanchez made a strong impression on the Manager Jim Leyland during the playoffs. Not making an effort to retain
him shows the Tigers are happy with the strength of their pitching rotation.
A team that has Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello and Doug Fister in the pitching rotation, of course, has all its bases covered. Sanchez may well end with the Tigers if he is unable to reach an agreement with any other team. The Tigers also
made an announcement last week that they will not be re-signing Delmon Young for the next season.
The other big new from Detroit is that Designated Hitter Victor Martinez is looking in great shape ahead of Spring Training camp. According to a Tigers spokesperson, he is an 8 on a scale of 1-10. Martinez hit .330 with 103 RBI’s in 2011, helping the Tigers
claim the American League Central Division title. It will be interesting to see if he can give similar results in 2013.
"Victor hasn't played for a year. Everybody's just assuming, 'Well, you got Victor back.' And, believe me, I'm thrilled to have Victor back,” Leyland said of Victor Martinez.
Leyland added, "We get the Victor back we had two years ago, we're really good. But who knows that? The guy hasn't seen a live pitch in quite a while. So, I don't know how it's going to come out. Everybody's just assuming."
The Tigers could sign on reliever and an outfielder and it is also possible that they will bring back Sanchez if he is not signed on by any other team that is as big of a move as they will make this winter.
