Not playing at the Eden Gardens will be a big disappointment – Harbhajan Singh
Historic Kolkata stadium Eden Gardens will not host the February 27 World Cup match between India and England, and the decision has left Indian off-spin prodigy Harbhajan Singh severely disappointed.
The 30-year-old spinner from Jalandhar said that Eden Garden is one of his favourite grounds and he was very excited to bowl at the venue.
“I don’t know why it has happened and I can’t do anything about it. Obviously we are disappointed... Bohat yaadein hain Eden ke saath (I have some great memories of the Eden Gardens),” said Singh, after the decision
to not hold the match at the venue was made official. "It was our main ground. Not playing at the Eden Gardens will be a big disappointment for us. It's one of my favourite grounds in India,” he added.
The ICC on Monday rejected the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s plea to reverse its decision of stripping Eden Gardens from hosting the 27 February clash of the titans. The apex body also confirmed Bangalore
as the new venue to host the match on the same day.
The off-spinner did not blame anybody for the humiliating incident, but reiterated that the whole team was disappointed.
Praising the stadium, Harbhajan said, “It's one of the oldest stadiums in India... The structure, the way the stadium is built makes it really beautiful … It's always been very lucky ground for us and also for
me, that itself makes it really special.”
Singh indeed has some great memories attached with the venue, including his epic hat-trick against world champions http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 break Australia’s record winning streak of 16 Tests.
Harbhajan said that the enthusiasm and atmosphere of the crowd is what makes the Eden Gardens experience so memorable each time. “The crowd makes it really special. No other ground can match Kolkata in terms of
the number of people turning up for the match. Even in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 (Wankhede) a lot of people come to see the match, but it's almost double in Eden Gardens. You literally feel the noise,” he said.
Indian off-spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ravichandran-Ashwin-c84208 agreed with Harbhajan’s comments and said that Eden Gardens has got an ‘electrifying atmosphere’ and he was feeling ‘a little sad from inside’ upon hearing the decision.
