  1. you may as well get it over and done with because if you owe them money they will charge you interest on the amount owing (and the interest is calculated on a daily compounding basis, at a rate much higher than you would expect).  They could also impose penalties for each late return (I think $110 per 28 day block each one is late), although they may let you off on the penalties and maybe even the interest if you tell them upfront (rather than waiting for them to tap you on the shoulder)

ring the ATO about your options. pay the additional tax (who knows yo might end up with a refund) and stop worrying about it!

  2. If you lose your old PAYG Payment Summary (Group Certificate) you can use a Statutory Declaration instead. Lodge your tax returns. That's true, the ATO is quite fair, very helpful. Generally you can be sure, dealing with the ATO, is like picnic, relative to dealing with the IRS. The nasty aggressive, rude ATO people (I think - from my experience) are confined to the super dodgy audit area - not so much small individual area.

  3. I'm not sure how you would go in your situation, but I have always found the tax office to be fair.  Whenever I've found problems with my past returns, I've filed an amendment to the return.  If I owe them, I usually end up paying them what I owe + interest.  Sometimes you may get a small fine.  If you are up front with them, you are usually OK.  However, if they pull you up in an audit, I expect that they will give you a hard time.  I'd ring them and find out what your options are .

  4. If you have worked for the same employer for the past three years, they can give you a copy of your group certificate.  I was in payroll and I used to get copies of group certificates for our employees.

If you do not put in your tax for say three years and then decide to you will be required to pay interest on whatever tax is owed for the 3 years.

That is what happened to us.  It cost us about $30,000., not nice.

  5. I have never handed in a tax return, So i'm kinda in the same boat. i just hope i don't get my **** grassed!
