I started germination for an herb seed yestreday at 5:00PM PST. I am doing the moist paper towel method right now, and I am wondering if I should try putting the seeds in a glass of purified water instead.. Which method is most effective? Is it too late to put them ni a glass of water?

  1. hmmmm, i always use the paper towel in a bag plan, but I don't think you should completely submerge them in water. It never seems to work for me when I submerge them in water.

  2. Personally, I quit doing the paper towel thing years ago and now drop them into purified water (until hatch).  Always get about 80-90% germ.

    Usually takes 3-4 days

  3. Some seeds have a hard outside layer that needs to be scored. Cut a small slit on the seed and then put them in a very wet paper towel.

  4. No, don't use a glass of water.  Seeds actually need oxygen to germinate.  Using the wet paper towel in a baggie works great.  Just make sure you open it every day or so to check, this will let in some oxygen.  You will need to give it a couple days before they will sprout.  In 3 days, if you don't have any sprouting, dump them and try it again.

  5. My entire garden was started from seeds, and let me tell you it isn't easy! I had a lot die, a lot not even germinate, and others that were very picky about watering and sunlight. I also have basil, it took a few days for that to germinate. I don't do the paper towel thing. I recommend buying those germination trays (peat pots) and fill them with dirt. They are brown and it's a tray of like 6 individual pots type things - the package says you can plant it directly into the ground and it will deteriorate, just leaving the plant. I don't do that though... I just transplant the plant into a pot once it gets big enough. Good luck!
