At the instant a traffic light turns green, a car starts moving with a constant acceleration a of 2.27 m/s2. At the same instant a truck, traveling with a constant speed of 9.61 m/s, overtakes and passes the car. How far beyond the traffic light will the car overtake the truck?

    t sec. be the time at which the car passes the truck,

    s metres be the distance from the lights.

    For the truck:

    s = 9.61t ...(1)

    Using the equation s = ut + at^2 / 2 for linear acceleration, the distance s of the car is:

    s = 2.27t^2 / 2

    Equating the two distances:

    9.61t = 2.27 t^2 / 2

    t^2 = 2 * 9.61 / 2.27

    t = 2.91 sec.

    Substituting this value in (1) gives:

    s = 28.0 m.
