I was contacted by someone in admissions of the school I want to attend in the fall and I already made an appointment to visit the school. I forgot to ask if there were any seats available for sept. classes, I didn't feel like calling so I figured I'd send him an email, but I wasn't sure what kind of greeting to use? His name is Thomas Haynes, Is "Dear" to formal? Maybe "Hello Mr. Haynes", Good Afternoon Mr. Haynes? I would appreciate your help.

Thanks.

  1. I think "Dear" is generally reserved for written letters because it does sound very formal.  "Hello" or "Good Afternoon" are perfectly acceptable;  polite and pleasant without being dated.

  2. say good afternoon mr. haynes.
