I live in texas and it gets very dry here. On some of my favorite courses there are some areas that are so dry and cracked that its hard to get the ball in the air and i usually go from one bad spot to another. These bad few bad holes are killing my game. Any advice on what kind of shot would be best?

  1. I have read the previous responses and I think simply moving the ball position is not going to help.  You need to flatten out your swing so you do not take huge divots causing backspin and allow for the terrain to dictate how you hit your shots....obviously tight pins up front are not birdie holes so play for pars....utilize the dry conditions for increased distance and play bump and runs when possible.

  2. Condition of hard surface mixed with dead grass is nothing more than a shot on hard pan with pine needles.

If getting into the air is the priority we can do it in a couple of ways.

Yea, play the ball forward and pick it clean.  The drawback is that if you are not steady on the downswing, your gonna take part of Texas farther than the ball.

If I know that I am going to play on hard surface conditions, I will replace one of my irons with a 23* 9w that has a mid-low kick point.

If your a sweeper, this would work very well.

Sometimes, we just have to adjust our gear to the conditions that we are going to play.  If this bruises ones ego, it is better than playing the next shot in less than desirable and embarrassing situation, but yet retain the ego that got you there in the first place.

  3. I suggest you go to the course one day and try a number of shots with different clubs from the areas you are having trouble hitting off.

    Have a good one...

  4. It doesn't matter how you hit it, your wife will beat you anyway... even in a desert.

  5. Hitting off dry hard ground is gonna be tough no matter what.

On hard ground like that you're going to have to pick it clean by just barely grazing the ground with the club head on your swing.  Takes alot of practice.

Take a nice easy swing and let the club do the work.  Don't try to kill the ball.  And make sure you watch yourself hit the ball, so you don't pick your head up.

With this, you should be able to hit the ball off the dry stuff and get it into the air.

    Hope this helps!

  6. With such dry ground, try moving the ball forward in your stance, taking a flatter iron, 4/5, and try a lower punch shot. This is somewhat tough to control with distance, but if you can get a feel for how much roll you are getting, you can adjust your punch shot and execute the bump and run type shot.

  7. Play it further back in your stance and catch the ball first.
