  1. Watching TV can help a lot in learning more vocabulary, face it, you will not learn everything in school, especially not slang. It will also help your braid get used to correct grammar, sentence building, thus helping you move from "thinking in your native language, translating in your head and then speaking up" to "thinking and talking in this new language without translating in your head".

TV also has the huge benefit of being able to actually hear how the words are really pronounced, which can really help if your teacher is not even native of the language he/she is teaching.

  2. mostly listening comprehension, and (up-to-date and useful) vocabulary domain. Also, it may add to your grammar knowledge.

  3. That isn't a stupid question...if you watch interactions between speakers of a different language, you'll get a feel for what the language sounds like when native speakers use it; the various figures of speech or other verbal expressions, and the rhythm of the words of the language--much more than you can get by reading the language out of a book. Watching live interactions between native speakers will help you learn the new language much more effectively.

  4. Listening ability, especially as you are exposed to a wide variety of accents.

Reading ability (combined with improved spelling) if you use subtitles so that you can be sure you are hearing properly.

Cultural awareness, through understanding the background against which the language is spoken.

  5. In a word, comprehension.
