Not used to the ball?

So I'm starting to play volleyball. In gym class, we use a softer, lighter ball. I'm pretty good with that one. But I just can't get used to the hard ball. Any tips on how to change?

  1. i started playing volleyball in 3rd grade and i went to a camp and i always came home with red arms... and then one day the leaders said to put socks on your arms and i did and it helped and also if you keep practicing with that ball, and break it in, you'll get used to it

  2. I used to have that problem but I just kept using the hard one and eventually got used to it even though it hurt REALLY bad

  3. dont but another volleylight, the softer and lighter ball, buy the same ball your school uses and keep practicing with it. it will hurt and make your arms red for awhile but keep practicing and youll get used the the redness and the hurt. just keep playing with the harder ball and youll get used to it.

  4. Just keep practicing...when I began to play, I would go home with bright red and swollen arms because the ball would hurt.  Over time, your arms and body get used to it.  Maybe try not doing as much with the harder ball until you get used to it...then it will seem exactly like the soft one!  Good Luck!

  5. A better answer would be..... to make the transition from a lighter ball is not to buy another lighter ball!!!!

Instead, find out the company that makes your ball at school and purchase one just like it. Then take it and find a concrete wall that will not bother anyone by the pounding.

Then pass the ball off the wall over and over again. What your going for here is as many touches as you can... to get used to the ball. Think of it this way - if you play on a 6 person team, you only get to touch the ball every once in a while but if you play against a wall you get to touch the ball many times - speeding up your learning ability.

As an x-pro on the beach - I did this and it really improved my game. Also if you take a look at the resource below, you can learn allot by watching the videos.

  6. That is good advice.  Buy a volleyball just like the one that you use at school.  Make sure the pressure is the legal pressure.  About 4.3 to 4.5 pounds.  Maybe your school likes the extra pressure in the volleyballs.  (I went to a high school to referee the match and their game ball had so much pressure that it pegged my gauge.  Over 12 psi.  That ball would HURT if you had to pass it.

Practice your passing.  The more you practice, the less it will hurt.  Also, you passing will get better.  (Have you ever noticed how much less a good pass hurts your arms.  If you shank a ball, your arms are on fire.)

Practice the serving, setting and spiking as well as your passing.  Once you get comfortable with the new volleyball, you can relax and just play. The heavier ball will not be an issue.

  7. Do a transition... online at spikevolleyball.com they have a "volleylight" ball. Its a volleyball that is light weight and soft to the touch. They come in all different colors!  Once u get used to them try an even harder one...the regulation volleyballs. U can also get those kinds at spikevolleyball.com aswell. Hope that helps good luck!
