Not using the right power cord on my dell?

My Dell Inspiron 6400 is telling me I am using the wrong power cord and the computer will not charge and operate slowly. The power cord I am using is the one Dell gave to me when I bought my laptop and its worked fine for 2 years now, so I know I am using the right one.I've unplugged the cord in every way possible and I've also run a virus scan and it says I have no virus. Is there anything else I do to make my power cord work?

  1. hi the power rating of the power cord is probably too low, there are two distinct versions one designed for the docking station/port rep which is the higher power of the two and the other which which only work with laptops no docks or port reps, but as you say if this has been working fine for 2 years it must now be faulty, test using another if possible, dirt cheap on eBay also worth upgrading the BIOS

  2. 1 could be your computers internal power unit: malfunction.

2 could be that the battery is slowing failing and unable to hold a charge: this will usually happen if the laptop was mainly used as a desktop (rarely portable)

3 could be the power cord took a surge and now can no longer charge a battery.

  3. It sounds like your laptop is doing a Dell (Crashing & Not working properly).

Speak to Dell and see what they say.
