Not vapor locking. Maybe fuel pressure?

Question

From reading around vapor locking happens when gas heats up making the car die. When it cools down it will start again. My cars acts like its vapor lokcing but its not. Its the pressure. If i simply unscrew the line going to the carb. Can sit for a week and not start. If i unscrew the gas line pop it off the filter and put it back on it will start. For whatever reason that releases the pressure in the carb and line sand she will fire to life easily. How do i get the pressure to stop building up? Its a 1979 Mercury Zephyr. 302 motor. ive heard clothes pins for vapor locking but this is slightly different.

check the black canister by your gas tank. It has a poppet in it that if it screws up it bypass fuel straight back to gas tank. follow gas lines you will find it

Sounds like maybe the filter is pluged or like you suggested the fuel pump is bad..

Pull the line off at the carb put the end in a clear bottle, pull the center wire out of the disturbitor cap so the motor don't start and crank the motor over a couple times and see how much fuel it is squairting.. it should be a good amount. if there is not much volume then I would replace the pump.. if the volume is good then replace the filter.

Fuel pressure will not cause this condition, when you say you can unscrew the fuel line, wait then restarts. Not unless the fuel pressure is really excessive, which I would check and see if it was within factory spec's.

1/ Pressure reading

2/Line location, not blocked, or too close to a heat  source

3/Return lines, and fuel evaporation hoses,lines,connections

4/Fuel Cap

5/Float level

The cloths pin is a old thing to do is to take away from the fuel line, because of heat, which causes vapor lock.
