Question:

Notice of Individual Income Tax Assessment?

This will be long due to details...I just received a Notice of Individual Income Tax Assessment from the state of North Carolina for the year 2002. They claim I owe $1,965.95 in taxes on income from the tax year 2002. First of all I didn't live in NC in 2002 and furthermore I didn't have a job in NC in 2002. I worked full-time in New York State (and have my tax documents to prove it) in that year. I was also a resident in NY. My question is this...how can I find out where they claim that I worked in North Carolina and where they get the amount that I supposedly made ($14,148.00). I have called NC Dept. of Revenue and they said that the Federal IRS is where they obtained their information. I looked up the Federal IRS online to see if I can find any personal information on this but cannot. Does any one know who I can contact or what IRS department I should get in touch with? I am just really curious as to how they got this erroneous information Additional info: I did work in NC in the year 2004, but only worked minimum wage for about three months...therefore, I NEVER even made the amount they claim (and, of course, it was in a different year). Additionally, I did pay taxes when I worked the job at the pier. Confusing, but anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

  1. The notice of Individual income tax assessment is giving you time to file your own tax, and if you don't then IRS will be filing for you and you will owe.  IN the notice is a page that is "summary of income sources" this is the income reported to IRS by the employers.  If you review it and see it isn't your income and feel you are a victim of ID theft then go to the Police and file a report and call the Federal Trade Commission and Social Security administration, but hurry the notice gives you 30 days to respond, call the phone number listed on the notice and let them know what you are doing and how you plan to respond to the notice.

And if you are a victim of ID theft you should download Form 4506-T and request the wage information from 2002 through now to verify all income reported under your social security number is your income.

  2. Did you sell any property in NC?  When you look at your tax return, don't forget to look at schedule D.
