Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s Brian Kelly says team is improving
The head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Brian Kelly, says that his team is committed to getting better and has been making strides in 2010.
The Irish have not looked as though they have improved, as they sit with a 4-4 record and could be moving towards another .500 season. Nevertheless, Kelly maintains that the club may not always look it, but are moving forward every week.
Kelly believes that his coaching staff has a chance at putting together a strong team for next season, but wants more time with his players. Therefore Kelly has made it clear that his club needs to make a bowl game. Advancing to a bowl competition would
add another match to their schedule, one that Kelly says is important for his player’s development.
However, the season cannot be blamed entirely on the poor play of the Irish, as they have struggled with injuries all season and are currently missing five key players from their line-up, including three starting wide receivers.
Nevertheless, Kelly did not use injuries as an excuse for his club’s play.
“I’ve had some years where you’d worry about what shoulder was going to separate this week, or, we had one year where we had two centres that both had torn ligaments in their finger that required immediate surgery,” said the Irish’s head coach. “It’s just
one of those things that just, when you’re in the game of football, you’d better prepare for injuries. It just seems as though it’s one of those strings that you go through.”
The Irish had a weak opening to the season, winning their first game and then losing three straight. However, Notre Dame was able to battle back and win three in a row, only to lose to the Navy Midshipmen on 23 October, dropping their record to .500.
The Fighting Irish will be in action again on Saturday 30 October when they take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes.
