Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s Brian Kelly says there will be not lifts at practice
Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly says that the school will not be using lifts to tape team practices after 20-year-old Declan Sullivan died filming an Irish practice from a lift during a gale.
The school and state authorities have launched an investigation to determine who allowed Sullivan to film from the lift during the storm and whether or not they insisted the young man continue to film even after winds picked up.
“Relative to the lifts I believe that it was quoted that we would not use them until the investigation was complete. Nobody has come to me to say the investigation is complete, so I am operating under the same premise that the lifts would not be used until
the investigation is complete.” Kelly told the Associated Press.
The day before Sullivan’s death, the Irish practised indoors because of the high winds, and many are questioning why Kelly did not order another indoor practice only a day later.
“It’s been a tough 10 days. I’ve needed the strength of our team, my family and everybody,” said the head coach. “But we’ll get through it. Adversity strikes and you got to be able to lead during adversity, as well.”
The Notre Dame football program is at an all-time low. The death of Sullivan, coupled with a season that has been a failure on the field has left a once proud program devastated and in need of a re-build.
The Fighting Irish suffered an embarrassing one-point loss to the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes on 30 October, a game which was part of a new Irish schedule that was meant to help the team win more games in the 2010 season.
The Fighting Irish next take the field against the Utah Utes on 13 November.
