does anyone think it's fair that notre dame is the only FBS independent school? (OTHER THAN ARMY AND NAVY)

because i heard they have advantages and disadvantages that other schools don't.

if you think so, do you think there should be more independent schools?

i'm not trying to be a hater to all you ND fans, i just feel like educating myself on the topic.

  1. Notre Dame had the benefit of being able to negotiate its own TV rights for all home football games.  Teams belonging to a conference have to split money generated from whichever network they have a contract with.

This is also true for bowl games as Notre Dame gets to keep any money it earns from going to a bowl, whereas money earned by conference teams who go to a bowl game has to share some of it with their own conference.

It certainly can benefit a school if they have this opportunity but most schools don't.  Most schools just don't have the name recognition and football tradition as Notre Dame so it benefits them more to belong to a conference where their games can be seen on TV to attract recruits and they can receive money to continue their football programs.

It's all about TV exposure and money.

  2. Yes it is fair. The only reason ND is not and will not be in a conference is because schools join a conference for a few reasons they are 1. TV time 2. More money 3. more recuirts. Now tell me which one of those ND needs help with. They are the only team to have a contract with a major station, they dont need reciurts almost always in the top 5 or 10 and we all know they dont need money. Notre Dame is to college football as what Jordan was to the NBA. either you love them or hate them, but they will always produce ratings and are great for the game.

  3. ND and comments like those from cmow5 damage college football.  When independents sign a deal like ND has, and produce the junk that they have produced the last decade, and produce the ridiculously negative bowl results (consistent losers) - it speaks to only one thing - not what other schools "need", but to the greed of ND, the arrogance of a supposed "non-secular" school, and the blind dogmatic fans that care nothing about anything other than ND.  Football is about football, what's best for football, and a "we" mentality.  ND demonstrates none of those things, and their current greed has put them in a state of paying far too much for a coach that doesn't deliver.  Sound familiar?

    1.  Too much made over a school that will never return to its former supposed "glory" in an era when they could suck up more than their share of recruits.

    2.  Too much made over a reputation that was fictitious, leading to an overpaid TV contract for a school that can't deliver.

    3.  Too much made over a QB that didn't get a high draft position because it was all hype. And a new QB that is unimpressive on a marginal team. A knucklehead who projected 4 National Championships under his leadership.  Right...

    4.  Too much made over a head coach that hasn't delivered because of greed of all involved.

ND is a microcosm of greed and self-absorbed fans. Notre Dame doesn't join a conference because of one thing - they are trying (repeat, trying) to maintain a "specialness, uniqueness" that doesn't exist any more, but if they admit to that, they will have to join the rest of the 21st century and lose their gravy train, which they mis-spend and mis-invest with reckless abandon.

If they joined the Big 10 they would become another Northwestern - occassional bright seasons among a sea of mediocrity.  And that would be admitting to what they are.  As long as they have fans that think they're more than that - and are willing to pay for it - they will milk it for as long as they can.  That is the way of the greedy.  Not the "we" crowd. There is no honor in it.
