Novak Djokovic accomplishes the aim of ending the season as the number one player – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, ended the latest season with a successful Grand Slam title defence at the Australian Open but couldn’t do the same at the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open. In June, he lost at the
All England Lawn Tennis Club in London and sunk to the second place in the world rankings.
Moreover, the 25-year-old Serb failed to grab a medal at the London Olympics as well, losing the semi-final to Andy Murray and then stooping to the seventh ranked Argentine, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the Bronze Medal match. He
reached the final of the US Open in New York but failed to deprive the third ranked Briton from accomplishing a career-long dream of winning a Grand Slam event.
It wasn’t as successful a season as the previous one was. However, at the end of the US Open, the Serb clearly stated that he wasn’t going to be bobbed down by this meagre downturn in his form. In an interview to the reporters
of the US Open tournament, he said, “Being No. 1 of the world this year, end of this year is, yes, one of the objectives.  I'm going to try to recover from this and move on.”
Adding about the newly reformed rivalry amongst the Top-4 players, Djokovic said, “I'm not sure what's gonna happen next couple of years.  Obviously nothing is predictable.  You know, I'm trying to think about myself.  As I said,
it's a privilege to be part of this era.  It's obvious that the four of us, you know, we get to the later stages of every single Grand Slam.  Andy winning at the US Open makes it even more competitive and more interesting for people to watch it.”
Djokovic ended the 2012 season with a record of 75-12. However, the aim was to end the season as the top ranked player in the world which was accomplished; ended the second successive season as the number one athlete on the Association
of Tennis Professionals World Tour.
World number four, Rafael Nadal, comes back to the elite platform after a six-month injury layoff. He didn’t participate in Olympics and US Open. Hence, the competitiveness is bound to enhance with his comeback. Let’s hope, 2013
brings more entertainment to everyone across the globe.
