Novak Djokovic aims at more Grand Slam titles next year – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, had his career’s best season in the year 2011, when he won a total of 10 ATP World Tour championships, including three Grand Slam titles. He was mighty close to become the third man in
the history of tennis to hold all the four Grand Slam titles at the same time but couldn’t achieve the mammoth feat, courtesy to the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.
Only Don Budge and the legendary Australian, Rod Laver, have accomplished this unique record in the past. Winner of 17 Grand Slam title, Roger Federer, is also among those who went mighty close register this accomplishment but
even he couldn’t enrol himself in that elite club. Djokovic had two chances in the last couple of seasons but Nadal’s dominance on the red dirt brushed him away on both occurrences. The Serbian tennis ace hasn’t won the French Open tournament till date and
it the title he aims at in the 2013 season.
"I won the last big tournament of the year in London (the ATP World Tour Finals) and I am hoping that I can continue playing well," said Djokovic. "So my ambitions are always high. I want to win every Grand Slam that I play. Roland
Garros is always at the top of my priority list and ambitions. It's the only slam I haven't won. I played in the final, which is a step further than ever before."
Djokovic took off the 2011 season in a belligerent manner, winning the season-opening Australian Open title against Britain’s Andy Murray. He went on sweeping titles but his way was hampered by the Swiss Maestro, Federer, in the
semi-finals of the French Open. Although the Serb went on to win the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open Grand Slam tournaments, his loss at the French Open couldn’t fulfil his dream of bagging all the four Majors at the same time.
He had his second chance when he won 2012 Australian Open in a nail-biting five-setter against Nadal. All he needed to was to win the Roland Garros title to join Budge and Laver’s class. However, he went all the way to the final
of the clay court Grand Slam tournament but the dirt-court expert, Nadal, devastated him in the title match to clinch his seventh French Open crown.
Djokovic does not have any advantage at the start of this season, as he lost 2012 US Open final to Murray. Hence, he needs to reel off all the four Grand Slam titles on the trot if he has to share the record with Budge and Laver.
