Novak Djokovic aims at the world number one spot this season – Tennis News
Current world number two, Novak Djokovic, is very determined to reclaim his throne by the end of the running season. The Serbian juggernaut lost his world number one spot to the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, earlier this year but
desires to rise back to his former position before starting the 2013 ATP season.
The 25-year-old had the most emphatic 2011, holding onto the world number one spot for most of the time and winning piles of titles. However, his form at the running professional circuit wasn’t that impactful as it was the last
year. Djokovic failed to defend a number of his titles in 2012 and even lost his top spot to Federer after the Swiss claimed the Wimbledon crown in June.
With a 60-11 winning ratio and three ATP championship titles in his bag, Djokovic is eyeing to climb up the men’s rankings by the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Albeit only few tournaments are left in the remaining season, the
Serbian juggernaut is still confident to outperform Federer to regain his lost glory. He at least needs to bag the two remaining ATP Masters Series events, in Shanghai and Paris, in November to gain enough points to surpass the Swiss number one.
"That's one of the goals. Of course I want to be number one of the world again. It's an ambition. It's possible (by) the end of the year," Djokovic told reporters. "I try to focus on each tournament individually and see how it
goes. I need to play really well because there are so many great players in this moment... so we'll see."
With the Spanish King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, sidelined from the professional circuit due to injury, Djokovic has even more chances to pocket some more titles in the coming last month of the season. Nadal has been the supreme rival
of the Serbian tennis ace and his absence from the courts has lifted off a potential threat from him. However, the British number one, Andy Murray, has found his winning groove in the past few months and is aiming to hunt down Djokovic and topple him to claim
his world number two spot.
