Novak Djokovic aims to retain the Mubadala World Tennis Championship title – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, bounced back a set down to dismiss the US Open Champion, Andy Murray, in the second Round Robin of the Association of Tennis Professionals contest on Wednesday. It was a bitter victory
for the Scot who wanted to beat the Serb in front of his home crowd at O2 Arena in London.
In a post-match interview, the 25-year-old Serb hinted at repeating the heroics in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship from the current season and wanted to clinch the title for the second straight year in 2013. He loved playing
in the suburbs of Abu Dhabi and planned to return to the arena to make sure that he saved all points from that tour.
Djokovic said, “Becoming World Number one was a lifelong ambition and I’ve had another solid season, playing some good tennis to get back to that position. But I want to stay there and build towards the next Grand Slam by getting
into the winning habit early and it’s a habit I want to keep in Abu Dhabi. I want to defend my title but it won’t be easy as it’s a world-class line-up. Going back as the defending champion is always special, but I’ve some very good memories from last year,
especially of the fans and beautiful weather. I arrived early in Abu Dhabi to enjoy, so I want more of the same.”
However, the invasion of Djokovic will face stern resistance from the other Top-10 players that will feature in the tournament contested in the capital. One of the rivals for the Serb will be the player who will be eagerly looking
for his revenge; Andy Murray. Moreover, the list enriches with the likes of the reigning French Open Champion, Rafael Nadal, who will be returning from a major injury layoff at the Australian Open 2013. David Ferrer who will lead the Spanish squad for the
final tie of the Davis Cup will also be in the draw. Other two Top-10 players that are included in the draw are the sixth ranked Czech star, Tomas Berdych, and the Serb tennis ace, Janko Tipsarevic.
It was a sold-out arena in this year’s edition of the tournament and the same is expected especially considering the line-up of the tournament that features some world class athletes. Winner of the tournament will take home the
prize money of $250,000 which is a hefty amount. The Serb is looking to bag all that by himself.
