Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal on the verge of making history – Tennis News
History will surely be made at the end of Men’s Singles final of the second Grand Slam of the season, Roland Garros.
World number one, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, and second ranked, Rafael Nadal of Spain, will face each other in the title match at the French Open in Paris on Sunday.
Djokovic is bidding to become only the first player after a gap of 43 years to hold all the four Majors in tennis at the same time. Australia’s legendary player, Rod Laver, was the last man to achieve this feat in 1969. Many legends
have come after him including Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and many others but none of them were able to match the mark of Laver.
Among the recent players Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal came quite close to achieve that, as they won three Grand Slams in a row but failed to win the fourth one consecutively.
Djokovic said, during an interview with the media, "I have this golden opportunity to make history. This motivates me. It really inspires me. I believe I'm at the peak of my career. I'm playing the best tennis of my life in last
year and a half, and I should use that. I should use that as a confidence boost and try to get my hands on title.”
The Serbian added, “I know that I have to be playing consistently well at a very high level in order to win best ‘of five against Nadal here. It's the ultimate challenge."
On the other hand, Nadal is aiming to win his record seventh French Open crown. He is currently sharing the record of most titles at the French Open with Bjorn Borg.
This is the Spaniard’s eighth appearance at the Roland Garros and he has lost only one match so far, with the winning number at 51.
No one has dominated the clay courts of French Open like Nadal has done in recent times. The Spaniard is also in supreme form at this year’s event, embarrassing his countryman, David Ferrer, in the semi-final, as he allowed him
to claim just five games in the entire match.
Nadal, who has earned the title of 'The King of Clay' due to his amazing performance on his favourite surface, has not lost even a single set on his way to the final.
The Spaniard will have an edge over Djokovic, as he had beaten the Serbian in their last two meetings during the European clay court season.
