Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer drawn to meet each other in semis – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic of Serbia; and the six time former champion, Roger Federer, are once again placed in the same half of the draw at the Wimbledon.
They were also drawn in the same half last year but Federer had lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarters. Since last year’s French Open, Federer and Djokovic have faced each other three times in semi-finals at Grand Slams.
The Swiss Maestro broke Djokovic’s winning streak from the start of 2011 by beating him in the last-four stage at the French Open. The Serbian juggernaut avenged that loss by coming back from a deficit of two sets to beat Federer
in a five set thriller 6-7(7), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 in the semi-finals last year’s US Open.
In their latest meeting at the last-four stage of a Major, Djokovic thrashed one of the best players in the history of the sport in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in the semi-finals at this year’s Roland Garros.
Federer has lost in his six of the last seven meetings with Djokovic but he still leads 14-12 in the overall head to head series.
The Serbian is also the defending champion at the SW19, as he toppled Spanish King, Rafael Nadal, in four sets to win his first Wimbledon title last year.
In this year’s championships, Djokovic will open up against former world number one, Juan Carlos Ferrer of Spain. On the other hand, Federer faces an easy opponent in the shape of another Spaniard, Albert Ramos.
11-time Grand Slam champion, Nadal, would be happy that he would meet the British number one, Andy Murray, in the semi-finals once again. The Spaniard, Nadal, has beaten the Brit at the same stage of Wimbledon in the last two years.
The left-hander is in form, as he defeated Djokovic in four sets to win his record seventh title at the French Open earlier in this month. Nadal is the same player who ended Federer’s unbelievable dominance at the grass courts
of All England Club by beating the Swiss Maestro in the 2008 final.
The 26-year-old will play Brazilian contender, Thomaz Bellucci, in the first round of this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
